Our fears and anxieties often stem from our thoughts, which we perceive as real. We become so attached to them that we define ourselves based on them. However, the fact is that many of these thoughts are actually lies we have been telling ourselves for a long time. Sometimes, these lies are adopted from others who misled us, and we accept those lies as truth without questioning them.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on how our thoughts and beliefs shape our emotions and how our emotions affect our behavior. The first step in CBT is identifying negative or distorted thought patterns. We can replace these patterns with more positive and authentic thoughts by learning to challenge them. This process helps us uncover the origin of toxic, distorted emotions such as fear, shame, guilt, anxiety, helplessness, hopelessness, depression, and anger. As we transform our thoughts, we change our emotions, increasing overall happiness and self-esteem. We begin to navigate from a healthier perspective that can positively affect every aspect of our lives.
CBT also helps us build coping strategies to confront our fears. Through this therapy, we explore and transform the mental filters we run experiences through to interpret our life experiences. These filters can cloud the truth and contribute to negative, distorted thoughts about ourselves and our world. CBT encourages us to engage in enjoyable activities, giving us a sense of purpose and accomplishment. By challenging and reframing our thoughts, we gain insight and perspective, creating a more hopeful outlook.
